Child Labor

I knew child labor still existed. But I had no idea that it was this big. There are 200 million child laborers, and millions of them, will never go to school. Many people have tried, and have helped with this problem. There are 28 million fewer child laborers than 4 years ago. But this is still huge. Child laborers have a higher risk of chronic disease and a death rate of 1.6 times higher than other children. 100,000 kids are injured on farms each year. Many child laborers are doing 30 hours of labor EACH week. And lots of them are missing school. Half of the kids who work on farms don’t graduate from high school. This information I read and the video I watched opened my eyes to the reality of Child labor. It still happens. And we all should try to stop it.

Letter From Charlie

Dear Journal,
I went to visit my dearest sister Lyddie today. I was unsure what she would say when I showed. When she saw me she seemed stunned. I suppose I must’a changed since last time I saw her. She seemed lots with words. I explained to her of my wonderful life and how I have become taken in as one of their own. I told her Rachel was invited to come home with me. And her facial expression seemed as thought she was going to smack me in the head. I was rather frightened. But I knew Lyddie knew what was best for Rachel. So, as expected she approved and said she would have Rachel ready by the morn. I felt pain for Lyddie having to dismiss Rachel for so long. But I was rather excited by the thought of seeing my small sister.
I hope Lyddie understands,
Charlie

Is Lyddie A Slave?

Lyddie is a slave. Being a slave means being forced to do labor for someone without a choice and without being paid. Lyddie is forced to work at the tavern for the mistress doing many chores without being paid for them. In the text it said that Lyddie’s mother sent her to the tavern to pay off debt of her fathers and she has no choice weather to go or not. She can not leave and she is not getting paid for the work she is doing. This makes her a slave. “Can you believe these fools?” “They don’t know what it’s like to be trapped.” These were things said by Triphena. Obviously she is showing what’s its like to be trapped and forced to work.
These are both indications that Lyddie is enslaved by The Mistress at the tavern.

Math reflection 4 page 75

1. A. Order of is the steps in which you follow to solve a problem. One example is P.E.M.D.A.S. Order if operations is important to understand because if you don’t follow them you won’t solve the problem correctly and get the right answer.
B. 6•(6-7)= -6       6•6-7=29

2. A. It means that you can change the order in which the integers are and you will get the same answer.
B. Integers are commutative when its a addition or a multiplication problem. 6•7= 42    7•6=42      4+3=7     3+4=7

3. To say that multiplication distributes over addition and subtraction means that when you do a problem with multiplication and addition or subtraction that you must do the multiplication first unless there is parenthesis around something.
6•7-4=38 That shows that you would do the multiplication before you do the subtraction. Unless it looked like this, 6•(7-4)=18 In this case, you would do the 7-4 first.

Poetry Anthology learnings.

After doing the poetry anthology I learned many things that could help with creative writing. Such as onomatopoeia. No matter what type of writing it is you can always use that if you need to show what a noise sounded like. Also you could use Simile, Or metaphor. They are good to use when you are describing how something looks, smells, tastes and feels. You really can use any sort of learnings from the Poetry unit to help with everyday writing.

Poverty reactions

When we found out about the poverty in Maine I was shocked.
I was surprised because I had no idea there were that many people who were without food, clothes and shelter in Maine. I had always thought of Maine as being lucky because we could afford homes and the other essentials. I knew that our county was one of the richest counties in the state, and I just figured the rest were close behind, but I was wrong. Very wrong.
Learning about the poverty really opens my eyes to what’s around me. I never really thought that there could be people in our school suffering from poverty. But when I think about it, I could probably name a few people who struggle slightly with the problems of poverty. This really makes me want to help people who REALLY struggle daily. I hope there is something I am able to do to help.

A christmas Carol. what i thought

The play A Christmas Carol was very well done.
It was cool how they had the people in the play narrating it as it went.
From the beginning of the play I could tell there would be many things in common with the the book and play. Such as the words they spoke and how there was someone telling the story almost the whole thing. I thought that the play wouldn’t have someone telling the story and just have them acting it out, but it was cool how they had someone telling it with words and not just actions.
I was surprised that they had the bed float in the air. I didn’t think they would ever do something like that because I thought they may be worried about someone getting hurt. But it was really cool and I think it made the play even better.

What the scene is like? ACC

In the scene where the first ghost takes Scrooge out the window, I think they will do it by having a window, and have scrooge and the ghost go through it and use smoke machine. Making us unable to see the on the other side. Then they will close the curtains and when they open them, they will be in the new place.

Ebenezers made up, messed up childhood

As Ebenezer walked out the door he had that everyday feeling of uneasiness wash over him. School.
Ever since Edward Smith started teasing him for being “poor” and “dirty” he has dreaded returning to that dreadful atmosphere. He hoped that after the Christmas break Edward would leave him alone.. But boy was he wrong. Edward just teased Ebenezer even more. He rubbed the fact that he got a lot of toys in his face and he always brought up that his father wouldn’t be able to afford those kind of things for Ebenezer even if he was still alive. Ebenezer’s father had died a year before on Christmas day and Edward won’t ever let Ebenezer forget it.
Ebenezer rubbed his icy hands together as he walked through the frozen snow. Replaying all the terrible things that had happened over the coarse of a year. Crunch, crunch. Crunch, crunch. The sound of the snow made Ebenezer cringe.. That very sound, that very month, that very holiday.. That was the reason for all of Ebenezer’s troubles.
As he walked up the stairs of the school he made a decision. He decided he hated Christmas, he hated everyone’s happiness and his pain. He hated Edward and the kids who made fun of his life..
Ebenezer decided, no one should be happy, he will never be poor and live a life like this when he’s older.
His life will be better than anything Edward could dream about. Ebenezer will live a high society life with money, and lots of it.

Pre-reading questions, #3

The reason someone might enjoy being disliked is if they are very shy or not social. If a person is very shy then they might not like having attention or having people try and talk to them. So if they are disliked they wouldn’t get this kind of attention. Which is why they might enjoy not being liked.
